CAN/ULC-S1001 testing, is a new required regulatory requirement in Ontario as of January 1, 2020. As it is new requirement, it is often either forgotten or brought forth during construction late in schedule. Proponents such as, engineers, general contractors, or electrical contractors are left scrambling to complete this project task during project close out, creating undue stress for various stakeholders and pushing occupancy dates. This presentation will provide clarification on the standard’s scope, how it is applied, how to plan, who is responsible and qualified to do the work and other clarifications.

With 20+ years of fire protection experience, Aaron currently serves as the CAN/ULC-S1001 Standard Chair and on the ULC 500F Technical Committees for Fire Alarm and Life Safety Equipment and Systems. He is employed by AtkinsRéalis as a Fire Protection Team Lead. As a subject matter expert at SNC Lavalin, he supports fire protection engineering at various industrial, commercial, and nuclear sites in Canada. Aaron has also served as a SFPE Chapter President and has maintained a CFAA fire alarm technician registration since 2002.
