Description

As part of our mission to give back to the community, the Ottawa Young Construction Leaders (OYCL) is proud to support Christie Lake Kids this year. On June 26, 2025 at 8am, our team will be on-site at Christie Lake Kid’s Camp helping the organization prepare for the upcoming summer camp season.

Your support will ensure that we can get all the work done on our work day, helping us purchase construction materials, paint and more to ensure a beautiful facility when it opens for the summer camp season.

When: June 26th, 2025, Starting at 8am

Where: Christie Lake Kids Camp - 264 Althorpe Road, Westport, Ontario, K0G 1X0

Level Selection: Please select your skill level at checkout so that we can understand how you can best support this year’s community build.

Skill Levels Available:

Level 1: Novice

  • Experience: No or very limited hands-on experience with building
  • Example Tasks:
    • Painting
    • Moving materials with wheelbarrows or carts
    • Holding tools or materials for others
    • Site cleanup
  • Tool Use: May have never used tools

Level 2: Beginner

  • Experience: Some experience with basic tools and simple tasks; understands basic safety.
  • Example Tasks:
    • Hammering nails with guidance
    • Measuring and marking wood
    • Screwing in pre-drilled holes
    • Helping with small assembly tasks
  • Tool Use: Familiar with hand tools like hammers, screwdrivers, measuring tape.

Level 3: Intermediate

  • Experience: Comfortable with most common tools and has completed a few small building projects.
  • Example Tasks:
    • Independently hammering, cutting with a handsaw, or using a drill
    • Assembling frames or simple structures
    • Interpreting simple construction plans or layouts
    • Helping guide Novice and Beginner volunteers
  • Tool Use: Proficient with power tools like drills and saws (under supervision if needed).

Level 4: Advanced

  • Experience: Regularly builds or repairs things; understands carpentry concepts well.
  • Example Tasks:
    • Cutting lumber to precise measurements
    • Installing siding, flooring, or framing
    • Helping lay out or design parts of the build
    • Supervising small teams or mentoring less experienced volunteers
  • Tool Use: Comfortable with a range of power tools and safety procedure

Level 5: Expert

  • Experience: Deep understanding of construction; may work professionally in a trade.
  • Example Tasks:
    • Roofing, structural framing, electrical or plumbing (if needed and certified)
    • Troubleshooting construction issues
    • Reading or creating build plans or blueprints
    • Leading teams and training others
  • Tool Use: Fully proficient with all relevant tools and construction equipment.
