CST: IHSA Basics of Supervising
Description
The IHSA Basics of Supervising is a 2-day in-class training program offered for free by IHSA if you are employed by a construction firm paying annual WSIB premiums. The OCA will book the IHSA to deliver the Basics of Supervising training for delivery at the OCA Training Centre at 9 Antares once per year so that pursuing CST Certification will have an additional option to take the course and at the same time benefitting from staying together with fellow CST students.
**Students registering for the OCA delivery option will be charged $60 as a cost recovery fee for beverages/lunches both days. The IHSA does not provide food or beverages with its training.**
Description:
Workers are often promoted to a supervisory position because of their high-quality work and experience. This program gives provincially regulated workers the training they need to become effective supervisors.
Participants will learn how to fulfil their role as a supervisor and about their responsibilities under Ontario law to manage health and safety in the workplace. Once they understand what to do, the program then gives them the tools to meet their health and safety responsibilities and ensure a productive workplace.
Program Content
- Legal Responsibilities
Participants will learn how to:
- Locate and cite sections in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable regulations
- Identify the duties of a constructor, employer, supervisor, and workers as detailed in the OHSA.
- Elements of Supervising
Participants will learn how to integrate health and safety into the supervisor's daily activities of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling work.
- Supervisor Safety Tasks
Participants will learn how to perform the duties of a supervisor by:
- Communicating hazard information through safety talks and worker orientations
- Monitoring health and safety activities through formal workplace inspections
- Investigating incidents and determine the immediate and underlying causes
- Enforcing health and safety rules
- Documenting workplace activities in a log book.
This 2 day module provides you with a course certificate (mailed to you) and is worth 2 gold seal credits.

Supervisors—especially those who have never received any training in supervisory skills or in their health and safety responsibilities under Ontario law

Luc Lafrance, NCSO, CRSP
Luc Lafrance has 35 years of construction experience, having started in the field within the building trades on mostly ICI and Heavy Civil projects. He left PCL Constructors as a supervisor to devote his energy to accident/illness prevention. Luc holds a certificate in Occupational Health & Safety from Ryerson University and is a CRSP in good standing. He is presently Health & Safety Consultant for the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association, with 20 years representing construction in the Ottawa area
